Abstract: After 1987, the closure of Mumbai’s textile mills marked the end of an era for mill workers, displacing thousands who had long been part of the city’s industrial culture. Despite decades of fighting for rights and better conditions, their struggle continued post-closure. New challenges emerged, including battles for compensation, squatting on mill lands, and adapting to a changing economy. Many workers, who had known only textile work, now faced socio-economic hardships. This ongoing struggle highlighted broader issues of labor rights, urban redevelopment, and the enduring legacy of Mumbai’s once-thriving textile industry.
