Abstract: The Western Railway Headquarters at Churchgate, a Grade I heritage building, celebrated its centenary in 1999. Though often overlooked amid Churchgate’s bustle, it symbolizes the vital role of the Western Railway in shaping Bombay’s growth and mobility. Spanning 28 stations from Churchgate to Virar, the suburban line connects diverse communities, transforming former villages, forests, and pilgrimage sites into vibrant urban centers. This rail line not only fueled the city’s commercial and social life but also physically structured Greater Bombay, serving as a lifeline for thousands of daily commuters and a unifying force in the metropolis’s development and identity.
