Abstract: Snehal Shah is an architect who believes in creating buildings that are “of its time,” inspired by the Gujarati proverb *vakhat tevu vaju*. His work emphasizes designs that respond to the time, place, and climate they inhabit, ensuring longevity and relevance. A constant in his approach is the manipulation of light and ventilation to maximize their advantages. Shah blends vernacular techniques with insights from broader Indian and Western architectural traditions, drawing influence from renowned figures such as Louis Kahn and Mario Botta. His architecture exhibits a rich mix of these influences, forming a unique style that evolves with the changing social and cultural landscape of India. Shah’s architectural journey spans over 25 years, during which he reflects on his growth as a practitioner alongside India’s rise as a modern nation. His education began at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, where he graduated in 1980, before pursuing a master’s degree at the Architectural Association Graduate School in London. Upon returning to India in 1987, he began his practice in Ahmedabad.
