Abstract: Over the past seven years, Bhagidari has successfully deepened democracy at the grassroots level by promoting participatory practices in governance. Replacing the traditional mindset of isolated responsibility—“You do your job, I do mine”—with a collaborative spirit of “let’s work together,” it has made governance more inclusive and citizen-focused. Bhagidari has played a key role in bringing citizens’ concerns into the planning and decision-making process, fostering greater accountability among government and civic bodies. Simultaneously, it has instilled a sense of ownership and civic pride among the public. The success of Bhagidari stems from its democratic and non-partisan approach to problem-solving. By encouraging dialogue and building consensus, it ensures that all stakeholders—government agencies, local communities, and individuals—share both responsibility and authority in addressing issues. This inclusive model promotes cooperation and trust, allowing solutions to be developed and implemented collectively. Citizens feel empowered and valued, believing that Bhagidari offers them a genuine and meaningful role in governance. The initiative has thus created a platform where people actively engage with the state, strengthening democratic values and making governance more transparent, accountable, and responsive to public needs.
