Abstract: This paper explores Decentralized Sewage Treatment Systems (DTS) as a sustainable alternative to centralized sewage treatment in India, driven by rapid urbanization and population growth. DTS offer localized, small-scale solutions that reduce infrastructure costs and promote water reuse. The paper examines the advantages of DTS, including lower operational costs, flexibility, and resilience. It also discusses the potential applications of DTS in urban, rural, and peri-urban areas, considering India’s socio-economic diversity. The role of various stakeholders in promoting DTS implementation and the importance of legal and economic incentives for adoption are also highlighted, aiming to improve water management and reduce environmental impact.
