Abstract: This volume, *Empowering Indigenous Communities and Primary Livelihood of the MMR – Volume I*, highlights the historical, cultural, and socio-economic contexts of indigenous groups in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with emphasis on the Koli community—its original inhabitants and traditional fisherfolk. It outlines the significance of Koliwadas and Gaothans as heritage settlements central to community identity and livelihoods. The abstract addresses key concerns such as urbanization, marginalization, and loss of traditional spaces. It also presents UDRI’s interventions, including documentation, advocacy, capacity building, and policy engagement, aimed at protecting indigenous rights and strengthening primary livelihoods across the MMR.
