Abstract: This study examines the lives and struggles of Bombay’s cotton millworkers from 1890 to 1919, focusing on how their domestic circumstances and labor shaped their existence. It explores the impact of migration, housing, and urban life on workers, and traces the development of their collective identity through strikes, early labor organizing, and political activism. Using archival sources and workers’ accounts, the work reveals how these laborers navigated colonial industrial society and contributed to the emergence of organized labor in India. The study offers insights into class formation and the socio-political dynamics of colonial urban labor movements.
