Abstract: The Shaar Harahamim Synagogue, or “Gate of Mercy,” is the oldest synagogue in Mumbai, built by the Bene Israel Jewish community. Before its construction in the 18th century, the community, mainly settled in the city’s western region, had no formal place of worship. The synagogue’s establishment marked a turning point in the religious and cultural life of the Bene Israel, symbolizing their growing presence in the area. It became a central place for worship and community gathering. Today, the Shaar Harahamim Synagogue remains a vital symbol of Jewish faith, identity, and the lasting heritage of the Bene Israel in India.
