Abstract: This handbook provides a comprehensive analysis of urbanization trends in India, utilizing the most recent census data. It covers a wide range of topics including the growth, patterns, and socioeconomic aspects of urbanization, as well as the availability of infrastructure, migration trends, and employment opportunities. The study focuses on 17 major Indian states, offering regional insights with a detailed district-level analysis of two developed states—Maharashtra and Punjab—and two relatively backward states—Rajasthan and Bihar. The updated edition incorporates two significant developments since the first publication. First, it includes the newly released migration data from the Census of India, which challenges some common misconceptions about rural-urban migration patterns. Second, it discusses the launch of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in 2006, the largest urban infrastructure development initiative in India.
