Abstract: The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), founded in 1984, revolutionized heritage conservation in India by combining technical expertise and public engagement. It expanded the scope of conservation beyond government-protected monuments, addressing both built and natural, tangible and intangible heritage. INTACH’s advocacy and awareness campaigns, along with the creation of a professional conservation community, influenced policymakers and development agencies. With over 140 chapters nationwide, it has significantly impacted India’s conservation landscape, becoming a crucial institution in preserving the nation’s diverse heritage. This publication reflects on INTACH’s evolution and its role in shaping heritage conservation over the past 25 years.
