Abstract: This issue of Ornament examines the diverse roles of ornamentation in historical, cultural, and architectural contexts. It critically explores the definition of ornament as both design grammar and expression. Essays address the revival and transformation of Mesoamerican art, symbolism in suburban spaces, and the relationship between architectural ornament and structure. The volume also discusses the shift from craftsmanship to technostyle, and design paradigms from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. Case studies on the Pantheon’s redecoration and Pennsylvania’s Independence Hall Mall in the USA highlight ornament’s lasting impact and its potential to enhance public and private environments.
