Abstract: Recently released at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, this first major monograph on architect Poppo Pingel celebrates his life’s work and enduring influence, particularly in Auroville. Presented by B.V. Doshi, the monograph captures Poppo’s unique, personal approach to architecture—marked by its rustic aesthetics, deep sensitivity to climate, landscape, and the spirit of place. Authored by Mona Doctor-Pingel, an architect and Auroville resident who studied at CEPT and later specialized in Appropriate Technology in Germany, the book combines biography, project profiles, and rich visual documentation including photographs and working drawings. This monograph is the inaugural volume in a series dedicated to pioneering Auroville architects who have significantly shaped the town’s architectural identity. It highlights Poppo’s long-standing commitment to Auroville’s ethos and built environment. The book also features essays by Suhasini Ayer-Guigan, Durganand Balsavar, Preeti Chopra, Brigitte Jacob, Wolfgang Schaeche, Elmar Schenkel, Poonam Verma Mascarenhas, and Franz Josef-Vollmer—all of whom were either students or collaborators of Poppo.
