Abstract: The Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad has faced significant environmental and infrastructural challenges due to rapid urban and industrial growth. Over time, the riverfront has become neglected, characterized by unplanned development, sewage contamination, industrial waste dumping, and flood-prone slum areas. The river, a vital water source for the city, often remains dry except during the monsoon, making it underutilized for social and recreational purposes. Additionally, the presence of slums along the riverbanks complicates flood management and impedes the provision of basic services. In 1997, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation established the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) to address these issues. With initial seed capital of Rs. 1 crore, SRFDCL was tasked with transforming the riverfront into a key asset for the city. They enlisted Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC) to draft a comprehensive development proposal, aiming to revitalize the riverfront, enhance the environment, improve the quality of life for citizens, and optimize infrastructure efficiency. The proposal seeks to tap into the river’s potential for social infrastructure, flood management, and recreation.
