Abstract: *Smooth and Striated: City and Water, Dhaka / Berlin* explores the similarities between the cities of Dhaka and Berlin, which, despite stark contrasts in population growth and urbanization, share a common history shaped by their rivers. Dhaka, with its rapid population increase and urban expansion, faces the challenge of sustainable growth, while Berlin, with a declining population, is focused on revitalizing its urban spaces after decades of division. Both cities developed along rivers—Berlin on the River Spree and Dhaka on the Buriganga—which played a pivotal role in their early formation. The seminar that led to this publication highlights key issues faced by both cities, including infrastructure, social cohesion, and hydro-ecological challenges. With over three billion people living in cities worldwide, especially in Asia, the seminar addressed the need for sustainable urbanization, considering not just ecological concerns but also social and infrastructural ones. The publication brings together diverse perspectives on how to improve living conditions, manage waste, and foster sustainable growth in mega-cities. It acknowledges the contributions of experts from Berlin and Dhaka who worked on compiling the results of the seminar.
