Abstract: Shivdatt Sharma (b. 1931) is a prominent Indian modernist architect known for his significant contributions to the architectural landscape of post-independence India. He started his career working as part of the Chandigarh Capital Project Team led by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Later, Sharma became the Chief Architect of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) before venturing into private practice. His architecture combines the core principles of Modernism with a contemporary understanding of Indian realities. Modernism, embraced as both a symbol and tool for nation-building in Nehruvian India, was a key influence in the creation of small townships, universities, public institutions, and housing estates across the country. Sharma’s work is part of a larger movement where architects, designers, and artists collaborated to construct India’s new identity in the post-independence era.
