Abstract: The *Bombay Highways Act, 1955* (Bombay Act No. LV of 1955, as modified up to 30th August 2001) regulates the construction, maintenance, and management of highways in the Bombay region. It consists of nine chapters addressing highway declaration, authority roles, restrictions on ribbon development, removal of encroachments, compensation, betterment charges, traffic safety, penalties, and miscellaneous provisions. The Act aims to ensure the proper use and protection of highways, prevent encroachments, promote traffic safety, and support infrastructure improvements through compensation and betterment charges. It serves to facilitate organized urban development and safeguard public infrastructure.
