Abstract: The Divided City contributes to the expanding body of scholarly research on cities in the global South. Cities in developing countries, particularly those in emerging economies, are experiencing rapid urbanization and social transformation. Drawing from empirical evidence in contemporary urban India, the book is well-positioned to assess how cities are tackling the challenge of inclusive urbanization. It explores the ways in which India’s urban development diverges from the ideals of inclusion, particularly in areas like access to energy, public services, architecture, land, infrastructure, commons, and cultural and civic spaces. The book also critically examines both policy and theory, addressing interconnected issues such as informality, privatization, political economy, and gender inequality in the modern Indian city. Ultimately, it advocates for a stronger focus on urban inclusion—social, economic, and environmental—which is increasingly acknowledged in both national and international urban policy frameworks.
