Abstract: This paper examines the historical and political processes behind the creation of New Delhi as British India’s imperial capital. After the 1911 decision to move the capital from Calcutta, the British aimed to construct a city that embodied imperial power and modern urban planning. The study explores environmental, architectural, and planning aspects of New Delhi’s development, as well as the symbolic importance of relocating to Delhi—tying colonial ambitions to earlier empires. Drawing on archival sources, the paper reveals how New Delhi was designed to serve both administrative functions and as a lasting symbol of British authority during the empire’s decline.
