Abstract: The Secretary of the Interior sets standards guiding the preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties listed or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The most common are the Standards for Rehabilitation (36 CFR 67), which focus on adapting historic buildings for modern use while preserving their key historic, architectural, and cultural features. Initially created for Historic Preservation Fund grants, these standards now guide federal, state, and local preservation efforts and determine eligibility for federal tax incentives. They apply to exteriors, interiors, sites, and new construction, ensuring projects maintain the historic character of properties and districts for long-term preservation.
