Abstract: In May 1901, the Government of India initiated an Ethnographic Survey to document the tribes and castes of the Bombay Presidency, focusing on their origins, social structures, customs, and occupations. Despite limited funding, which ceased in 1909, the survey relied on the voluntary efforts of scholars and local committees. The project produced nearly 300 articles, mainly based on the Bombay Gazetteers by Sir James Campbell. These materials, originally organized by district, were reorganized to provide a broader view of the region’s social fabric. The survey expanded knowledge of Bombay’s tribes and castes, combining historical data with new findings for future research.
