Abstract: Urban and environmental planners in India are facing significant challenges in preserving the country’s historic cities amidst urbanization pressures. The science of urban conservation is still emerging, with limited documented experience in the Third World. In *Urban Conservation: Safeguarding India’s Living Heritage*, studies on the conservation of three historic cities—Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur—are presented. These studies, supported by the Ford Foundation, aim to define the processes involved in conserving historic urban areas and provide frameworks for translating these insights into actionable projects. The Hyderabad study, which began in 1980, was completed and published in a two-volume work on conserving historical buildings and areas in the city. Meanwhile, studies on Ahmedabad and Jaipur are ongoing. This publication acknowledges the contributions of key individuals such as Shashi Prakash Shorry, Kulbhushan Jain, and Ray Werskett, who helped prepare the summary versions of the studies. It also credits the agencies responsible for urban conservation in these cities: the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, and the Jaipur Development Authority, whose continued efforts have made the publication possible.
