Abstract: This publication, the second in a series on urban studies, features key contributions by three prominent urban affairs experts. The writings were originally presented as keynote addresses at seminars organized by the Institute of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Mr. K. C. Sivaramakrishnan delivered his address at an international seminar in New Delhi (November 1991) focused on basic amenities in the context of rapid urbanization, particularly drinking water and sanitation issues. Prof. Biplab Dasgupta spoke at the Eastern Region Seminar in Bhubaneswar (November 1992) on urban basic services and local participation. Mr. M. N. Buch’s address at the Western Region Seminar in Baroda (April 1993) also explored the same theme. These presentations contribute significantly to ongoing discussions and efforts to address urgent urban challenges in India and other developing countries. The book’s introduction was written by Dr. Heinz Bongartz, Resident Representative of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in New Delhi, a respected scholar in his own right. The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung’s continued support for the urban studies projects of the Institute is also acknowledged and appreciated.
