Abstract: This booklet outlines the suitability of lime mortar for conservation projects involving historic or vernacular buildings. Unlike modern structures, which can tolerate strong, impermeable cement-based materials, traditional buildings require breathable materials to prevent moisture entrapment. The use of cement in these older structures can cause significant damage to the original stone or brick due to trapped moisture. Lime mortar, being softer and more permeable, allows for the natural movement and evaporation of moisture, preserving the integrity of the structure. The document aims to guide conservation professionals in understanding the benefits and appropriate use of lime as a binding material.
