Making Urban Data Accessible for Better Planning

Access to reliable urban data is essential for informed planning and effective decision making. To promote transparency and evidence based urban development, UDRI has created a range of digital resources that make spatial information on Greater Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) publicly accessible. From GIS datasets and thematic maps to the mapping of indigenous settlements, these initiatives support planners, researchers, government agencies, and citizens in understanding and shaping the region's urban future.

Building an Open Data Repository

UDRI has developed a digital repository of approximately 150 GIS datasets covering Greater Mumbai and the MMR. Available through Login Mumbai and the UDRI Research and Resource Centre, the repository provides open access to reliable spatial data for research, planning, and public engagement.

Understanding the Region Through Maps

To support metropolitan planning, UDRI has prepared the Greater Mumbai and MMR Mapbook, featuring 88 thematic maps on demography, governance, land use, infrastructure, education, health, and other key urban systems. Covering the 4,355 sq. km. Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Mapbook offers a comprehensive spatial overview of one of India's largest metropolitan regions.

Mapping Indigenous Settlements

As part of its work on indigenous communities, UDRI mapped 205 Gaothans and 51 Koliwadas across the MMR using Existing Land Use maps, Development Plan sheets, and extensive consultations with community representatives. The mapping creates an important spatial database that supports planning, conservation, and the recognition of indigenous settlements within statutory planning processes.

Looking Ahead

By making urban data more accessible, UDRI is strengthening evidence-based planning and encouraging greater public participation in city making. Through open GIS datasets, thematic mapping, and community focused spatial documentation, the Digital Inclusion initiative provides a valuable knowledge resource for building more informed, transparent, and inclusive cities.
